I discovered early on in my quest to lose weight that I really hated and I mean really hated exercise and I'm talking about those exercise machines that look like torture devices. You know the ones. What I've always found pleasure in though is walking so I decided to "walk off fat" and enjoy myself doing it.
Here are five easy steps to help you walk off fat.
Easy Off
Pump your arms. This was easy for me because I'd always done it when walking...just didn't realize how beneficial it was to weight loss. When your arms are bent and pumping vigorously, you're walking faster and burning more calories. A no brainer right?
Then I discovered Nordic poles. I remember as a kid watching a neighbour walking up the road with what looked like a small tree limb in each hand. What I didn't realize at the time was that he was actually burning about twenty percent more calories because he was engaging muscles in his upper body and his torso.
With the Nordic poles, you plant them firmly behind you at a 45 degree angle. Then you push back rather forcefully against the ground which propels you forward. Very cool!
Forego those killer hills. I was always under the impression that if I climbed the biggest slope, I'd burn more fat. However that's not the case. I know realize that it's better to maintain a constant speed on a moderate hill than to substantially slow down on a steeper one.
Set realistic goals. As with any exercise regime, if you get bored, you tend to throw in the towel. Walking off fat is no different. When I walk I choose a marker like a stop sign, or a park bench and really speed up until I reach it. Then, I'll walk the same distance but at a slower speed. Variety is the spice of life!
Watch your heart rate. I wear a heart rate monitor when I walk off fat. If I'm slowing down too much, it's like a personal trainer walking beside me giving me a push and vice versa, if I'm pushing it too hard, it will alert me to ease up.
Just as with any fitness regime you choose, you have to make a firm commitment to walking. A firm commitment to walk off fat will make you look better and ultimately feel better as you watch those pounds fall away. Doing something you enjoy isn't really work at all!
